Interview with Lauren Moyer

I’m very happy that we got the chance to interview Lauren Moyer, who is a painter and illustrator who graduated from CCS. Her latest work is going to be part of a two person show at Starkweather along with Anna Cangialosi. The opening is tomorrow, September 3rd, from 6-8 pm.

Caterpillar Dreams

Lauren was kind enough to take some time apart from getting ready to tell us about how she fell in love with painting, her travels to Alaska, and what’s next for her. She was also kind enough to include a sneak preview of her newest paintings and screenprints that will be in the show. The interview and lots of pictures are behind the cut.

How did you come to realize your skills in painting? Did it happen while you were in school, or earlier than that?

I first started painting my Junior year in College, but before that I did minimal painting. I first started out at CCS wanting to draw comics, which still piques my interest, so I didn’t think about painting, although in high school I became quite good at coloring with photoshop and a tablet… but that’s besides the point. Most of my techniques classes only taught acrylic and I really hated the look of acrylic, it just didn’t work for me. So one fateful evening I bought a basic color set of oils and the rest is history…. I love oils, they work for how I paint, really don’t have a bad drying time and the colors are so much richer.

Humming Thoughts

You spent last summer in Alaska. What was that trip like and did it affect your art at all?

It was great to spend time with my cousin Aurora, who is almost the same age as me and I hardly get to see. And having so much nature at your finger tips was incredible. I think I started exploring painting heavier on canvases and using cool colors for shadows instead of darks. It gave me a lot of time to look at others art and really study it. I also found that I can paint bears pretty darn good.

Goat Cloak was part of Vivisect Playset at Gallery 1988

Your work has been a part of several attention getting shows, such as Vivisect Playset. What would you say has been the most exciting thing that’s happened to you as an artist so far?

Of course being asked to show at Vivisect and Crazy 4 Cult was amazing, but winning a spot at the Society of Illustrators Student show and a scholarship is my most prized art memory. My school flew myself and the two others that won out there, and we got to drink wine in the old building in Manhattan and look at our art hanging on the walls. I also then was published in the Illustrators 50 book, and was able to meet and befriend some great artists like Chelsea Lewyta, Daniel Fishel, and Erik Jones.

What can you tell us about the paintings that you’ve done for your upcoming show at Starkweather?

I’m of course trying to incorporate as many animals as possible and Anna came up with the awesome name “The Preserve”, but I’m also trying to use lighter colors like pastels and pink because they are very prevalent in Anna’s work and I really want our pieces to just flow together. I’m also rediscovering screen printing and watercolor which really showcases my drawings.

What does the future hold for you? Any upcoming projects, or other mediums that you plan to try?

Well I really want to get more into watercolor and screen printing. They are a little more manageable then getting all my oil paints out and whatnot. I really want to start just drawing more, and who knows maybe full fill my comic dreams.

Thanks very much, Lauren! Again, the show opens Friday, September 3rd from 6-8 pm and will be on the walls until the 26th. More details at starkweatherarts.com.
