New Works by Jason Thielke

David B. Smith Gallery has changed its name (formerly Limited Addiction) and now it’s changing locations. It will remain in Denver, but will open its new location this Friday with ‘New Works’ from Jason Thielke.

Although his pieces look like flat illustrations on screen, it’s a different story in person. Since he uses different techniques to create his image – ink, aerosol, laser etching and lacquer – each application creates a layer.  In person, you can see the way his fine lines lay on top of each other, making a criss-cross effect.

A couple more comments about the gallery:

The new location uses wind energy to offset 100% of conventional electricity consumption. To anyone who’s ever wanted to open a gallery, imagine not having an electricity bill as overhead. Makes the dream a little closer to reality.

And a story of my own: this winter, on Valentine’s Day, in fact, I had to go to Denver for my job in advertising. As a strategist, I got to spend my Valentine’s Day listening to focus groups about SUVs. The one thing I wanted to do while I was there was to see Jason Thielke’s work in person. Somehow I managed to commandeer our rental car from my co-workers for an hour, and I raced to the gallery as fast as I could. Dave Smith himself was there, and he was kind enough to talk more about Jason’s process as I just kind of stood there, open-mouthed and happy that I had made it. It definitely made up, at least in part, for having to go on this trip on Valentine’s Day. Josh Keyes had some things there as well. It’s a great gallery and if you’re in Denver, go check out the opening this Friday. And send us your pics!
