Third Alert Designs

I’m not sure how Third Alert Designs has slipped under the radar. Hank Hanewinkle’s graphic design company out of Tulsa has produced some great posters for pretty big name acts. I really love the stark, vintage looking photography that he employs in his designs.

I don’t think Third Alert is going to be an unknown name for long, so you might want to raid the shop while it’s still stocked up.

Mark Goss

Ask and you shall receive. We asked for submissions while we were on vacation, and we got a great one. Mark Goss is an illustrator and graphic designer from Antwerp. His fantastic portfolio has a little bit of everything: tattoo inspired illustrations, paintings, graffiti, hand lettering and zines.

Most recently, Mark was part of a show called Dirty Fingers that just opened at Artspace Leguit in Antwerp. Behind the cut, you can check out a video of his step by step installation of one of the pieces for that show.

While We’re Away

Posting is going to be a little light around here for the next week or so. We’re going to that place that Michiganders affectionately call “Up North” for the weekend, and then buckling down in preparation for the People’s Arts Festival. In the meantime, may we suggest a few things to keep you busy?

  • The Silent Giants have a show going on at 323East. We missed the opening and don’t have pics, but their posters will be up through the weekend.
  • You can head to Midtown tonight for the Canfield Street Market. 5-9 outside of City Bird.
  • After that, hit up the closing reception for That DAM Box Show. 6-9 pm at the Detroit Artists Market.
  • Send us a submission! Suggest an artist for us to blog about by emailing us at heyyouguys at perfectlaughter dot com. Please don’t be shy about suggesting yourself, even if you don’t have a fancy website/portfolio. Send us a couple of images, and you could get a little piece of the internet in the form of a Perfect Laughter blog post.
  • We’re in the middle of finishing a couple of new prints. We’ve been posting process pics on Twitter, as well as other daily shenanigans. You can follow us at @perfectlaughtr.
  • If you’re not into Twitter, we have a Facebook fan page or a like page or whatever it’s called this week. But we try to only post important stuff on there so we’re not spammin’ up people’s Facebooks.

We’ll try to post a few times next week as we are able, and we hope to see you next weekend at the People’s Arts Festival!

Strawberry Luna

I love the simple, yet cleverly designed prints from Pittsburgh’s Strawberry Luna. She hand prints all of her posters, which she chronicles meticulously on her blog. Here are a few of my recent favorites. Many more can be viewed and purchased in her Etsy shop.

Kevin Tong’s Mechanical Dreams

Sometimes we stay up late, roll out of bed and stumble into our day jobs with screenprinting ink all over our hands, feeling somewhat accomplished. And when we sit down at our desks and login to Facebook at 9am, Kevin Tong is just going to bed. His illustrations are crazy amazing, he does all his own printing (by hand, without fancy machines), and ships everything himself, too. And on top of that, literally in the middle of the night, he makes time for process posts and videos – always with music that I love.

Kevin has a solo show at Phone Booth Gallery right now called Mechanical Dreams, and he put that promotional video together himself. There are six new prints available from the show. My faves:

You can see the rest on Phone Booth Gallery’s website. If you screenprint your own designs, you should definitely take a look at Kevin’s blog at tragicsunshine.com, because he documents his process so meticulously. (In fact, this post was supposed to go up yesterday, but I got lost in the archives.) I really don’t know how he does it all, but his work ethic, beautiful posters and packing tape with his name on it gives Dennis and I something to aspire to.
