Reclaimed Preview: Ryan Weiss

We were so excited that Ryan Weiss (whom we had previously posted about here and here) wanted to be part of our Reclaimed show. Ryan actually created two pieces, both of which are amazing.

Ryan sent over step by step process of how he created the piece Copacetic Sprawl.

1. The house frames are built with balsa wood and gorilla super glue.

2. Then we skin the frames with siding.

3. We do this by slicing up some balsa wood and paint them individually. Then mix and match them so that they are aesthetically pleasing, glue, trim and wah lah! house siding!

4. I found this chunk of wood at my parent’s house in a large pile of recently dismantled deck parts. The “patina” of the aged wood and rusted nails screamed “HEY, USE ME!”

5. And now we see what the layout looks like with the frame I found half off at Hobby Lobby.

6. We lay down some background colors.

7. Lighter fluid and fire are an amazing combination. I like the unpredictability of this technique, I can kind of control what general areas will get darker but you can’t always control the fact that fire burns your eye brows.

8. We check to see if the burns and textures are in the right place.

9. Next, the trees. In my pursuit of finding the right way to approach the tree idea, a fellow at Rider’s Hobby said the best and most economical way to make trees is to up root larger weeds or small trees. I uprooted these at my girlfreind’s parent’s house and dried them out in our oven.

10. We start greening the trees.

11. Trees are greened, houses look like house and the other stuff looks like other stuff. We just need to choose the proper lengths of the trees.

12. Done.

You can see this piece as well as the work of 25 other artists when Reclaimed opens on October 21st at River’s Edge Gallery in Wyandotte, MI.
