Tim Gralewski
It seems that screen printing is alive and well in Detroit. Between The Silent Giants, Pinkey Blaster, and Tim Gralewski there is a bunch of great print work coming out of the city. I recently had the pleasure of viewing Tim’s work in person on the walls of 323 East during last Friday’s Andrew Alexander show, and it really grabbed me. I find that much of the artwork I like is gritty, and Tim’s is no exception.

Here You Will Face Gods: Live Mural by the GR8
A couple of months ago, the GR8 held a live art and music event called the A/V Kids Experiment outside of Biddle Gallery in Wyandotte. Although I got to see the initial sketches of their mural early on, I had no idea how it ended up until the guys sent me this time lapse video of the whole day. The finished piece is called “Here You Will Face Gods”, and one of the GR8 artists Ben Pozniak did an amazing job shooting and editing this.
‘dAP @ the Wyandotte Street Art Fair
The Wyandotte Street Art Fair was so much fun this weekend. The ‘dAP (‘dotte Art Project) was situated right by the stage. The weather was fantastic. We met a ton of great artists there, a few of which we’ll be featuring on the blog later on. For now, here’s a recap of the live art that was happening on Friday and Saturday. Click to see a whole lot of pictures behind the cut.
Art Happenings – July 10th &11th.
This Friday and Saturday I will be live painting in the ‘dAP section of the Wyandotte Street Art Fair. Some of the artists who will have booths include Audrey Pongracz, Kevin Beehner, and Christian McKenzie. Thanks to Jeremy at River’s Edge Gallery for giving me the oppurtunity to show my work and to Dick Blick for sponsoring the event.
La Famiglia Magazine officially launches on July 15th and to celebrate they are holding a launch party/art show/fundraiser this Friday at 5E Gallery on Michigan Ave. The show begins at 9 pm and will feature art for sale by a number of local artists (including myself) and live music. Cover is $6 and it is restricted to 21 and older. All of the proceeds (including 40% of artwork sales) will be donated to the Heidelberg Project’s “The House that Makes Sense.” More information can be found here.
Finally, at the Whitney on Woodward will be host to the Jet Set event on Saturday. Festivities include live music by R Phrophet and live painting demonstration by local artist Nicole Camillari. Other artists showing are include Mary Kelleher Tassone, Chizzy the Artist, Laura Deljanin, Below Zero, Nate Thomas, and Mark Wissinger. Cover is $10.
An Interview with Rick McQuaid
I noticed Rick McQuaid’s work around Easter time, where he was part of a Peeps themed show at Biddle Gallery. In the back of the gallery, I noticed these gangster mugshot paintings called the Purple Gang series. The Purple Gang was a group of Detroit mobsters who, back in the 20s and 30s, dealt in bootlegging, prostitution, gambling and drug dealing. They were linked to about 500 murders, Chicago’s St. Valentine Day’s Massacre and the kidnapping of Charles Lindbergh’s baby.
Shortly after, I tried to find his website or any information online, but came up empty. I happened to be in the right place at the right time at a later event and got to meet him in person. We exchanged email addresses and he agreed to an interview. He is such a humble guy, always insisting that he’s not interested in self-promotion. This has made him a little bit elusive, and so I feel very lucky to share our conversation with you here. The interview and more pictures of Rick’s work are behind the cut.
