Rust Belt to Artist Belt III: My Take as a Creative

The ever present optimism of Detroiters was out in full force at this weeks Rust Belt to Artist Belt Conference. I was able to attend both Wednesday and Thursday mornings at the College forCreative Studies Alfred A. Taubman Center. It was the first time I was able to see the center, and it is amazing. The event was extremely well organized and offered a diverse group of speakers from many parts of the creative community.

Interview with Lauren Moyer
I’m very happy that we got the chance to interview Lauren Moyer, who is a painter and illustrator who graduated from CCS. Her latest work is going to be part of a two person show at Starkweather along with Anna Cangialosi. The opening is tomorrow, September 3rd, from 6-8 pm.
Lauren was kind enough to take some time apart from getting ready to tell us about how she fell in love with painting, her travels to Alaska, and what’s next for her. She was also kind enough to include a sneak preview of her newest paintings and screenprints that will be in the show. The interview and lots of pictures are behind the cut.
Jillian Evelyn
Jillian Evelyn draws the cutest things! If you want a dose of colorful, squeezable looking animals, she is your pharmacist.
(These three are mug designs.)
Jillian is a CCS grad who is currently living in Massachusetts. More work from her can be seen at jillianevelyn.com as well as on her blog.
Nikki DeSautelle
Detroit illustrator Nikki DeSautelle employs exactly the kind of dark humor that I love the mostest.

Nikki is a CCS grad, working as a freelance illustrator and teaching at the DIA. Much more of her work can be seen at nikkidesautelle.com.
Glenn Barr’s Detroit Solo Show at 323 East
Wow, this show was incredible. Glenn Barr has this way of using bright colors to fill in lighting but somehow make the effect so subtle and beautiful.
He finished many of his paintings with thick, imperfect layers of clear lacquer, making it look like they’re encased behind old, rain-streaked windows.
These must be seen in person, especially since he shows his work so rarely. If you’re not in the area, 323 East has a few things in their online shop. It looks like the Black Gold giclee is still available as of right now, too. The exhibition will be up through November 25th.
Pictures of almost everything (basically anything that wasn’t a print behind glass) can be viewed in the gallery behind the cut, on our Facebook page and on Flickr.

OUR LATEST GIGPOSTER
We got to design and print a poster for Darling Imperial's farewell show at the Berkley Front. They let us do whatever we wanted, so we went with vintage lettering and a weathered, faded feel.
