Recap: Sarah Burger @ City Bird
This post should give you an idea of how far behind we are on blogging. Not only do we have pictures from a few events to share still, we’re up to our eyeballs in submissions as well. Hang tight. Or send interns. And doughnuts!
It was all the way back on June 25th that we visited City Bird during the Canfield Street Market, and we saw Sarah Burger’s lovely art pieces. They were like beautiful, glittery, three dimensional topographical maps, made of felt and vintage sewing patterns.
Enjoy the rest of our belated photo gallery behind the cut.
Art happenings this weekend.

Tonight City Bird and Bureau of Urban Living are hosting the Canfield Street Market, which will include vintage clothing by MillieBea, T-shirts by Detroit Lives, and artwork by Sarah Burger. The Canfield Street Market will run from 5-10pm.
This Sunday from 5-10pm will be the opening reception for the It Came From the Gutter art show. The show will take place at the Garden Bowl at the Majestic and features 50 artists who were invited to convert bowling pins into works of art. Artists include: Mark Arminski, Gwen Joy, Tim Pewe, Matthew Hockaday, Jerry Shirts, Heather Accurso, Brian Stuhl, Wyl Lewis, Diane Whitehead, Ryan Matthews, Chris Bell, Marvin Shaouni, Oneita Porter, Dale Teachout, Karl Kanai, April Segedi , Heather Hansma, Mike Kelly, Holly Hinkle, Rolando Garcia, Drew Kups, Anita Andersons, and “Big” Joe McCuaig.
Kathy Leisen @ City Bird, Detroit
Christina and I stopped by City Bird on Saturday to shop for a few birthday gifts as well as drop off some our new screenprints. We didn’t realize that earlier in the month City Bird held an opening for Detroit artist Kathy Leisen‘s solo show. Kathy’s painting are quite striking and extremely well priced, with some pieces priced as low as $50. The show is up until May 8th, so if you find yourself in Midtown before then it’s very much worth seeing in person.

Announcing: Our Next Print, “Clara”

Our latest print is done! “Clara” is a 4 color screen print. Each one is printed by hand onto a page of antique sheet music. We sized it to fit into IKEA frames so it can be framed very affordably. The print is 8.75 x 11.5 inches and we did an edition of 30 this time.
While we were trying to decide what to name her, I looked up the history behind Schumann’s only piano concerto, which is what we used to print on. It was Schumann’s wife, Clara, who urged him to finish the concerto. She was then the first person to play the solo part when it premiered in 1846. Coincidentally, Clara was my piano teacher’s name and the person who gave me the sheet music. I hope she doesn’t mind that we sacrificed it in the name of art.
We’re very grateful to 323 East and City Bird who have both decided to carry it in their stores. It’s also available in our online shop. (By the way – if you missed out on our first print, “First Snow”, 323 East and City Bird still have a couple of those left.)
Introducing: “First Snow” Screenprint!
We’re happy to announce that our first ever screenprint is finished! Introducing “First Snow”:
Each one is printed by hand with custom mixed inks onto 100 lb. French paper (Construction in Nightshift blue). Each print is 8×10″ and is signed and numbered in a small edition of 20.
As if finishing it wasn’t awesome enough, City Bird and 323 East both liked it enough to stock it in their stores!! If you haven’t visited either of these places yet, definitely try to check them out before your holiday shopping is done. City Bird just opened up, and 323 East recently devoted the entire back room of their gallery to prints and handmade goods. They have so many neat things.
If you’re not local, this print is also available in our brand new Big Cartel shop. To keep it company, we’ve stocked some vintage accessories in the shop as well. Hope you find something you like!
