Reclaimed Preview: Marian Short

Printmaker Marian Short came up with a genius was to use found objects, or in the case images in her piece for reclaimed. Using rubbing from old headstones located at Lodi Cemetery to create this beautiful piece. One would not guess that the subject matter of this piece has such Solomon origins.

Alexis Anne Mackenzie

Alexis Anne Mackenzie is originally from Ann Arbor, but she’s currently based out of San Francisco. I’m loving her typographic floral collages.

Damien Tran x Ronny Hunger

Damien Tran and Ronny Hunger, better known as The Comet Substance have teamed up to create an awesome series of posters using imaged sourced exclusively from a shoe catalog from 1978. Over three days the guys created collages, and then prints that resulted in a series of four posters, each measuring 35 x 50 cm apiece. I really like the idea behind the prints, the process, and the end result. Some of these prints are still available in The Comet Substance shop.

Leah Tacha

I love these collage / drawing pieces by Leah Tacha. She is based in Brooklyn, NY, but is originally from Kansas.

She offers a bit of insight into her work by explaining:
“I was raised by a mother who was obsessed with color, glitter, and the shine of success, and a father who was inherently practical, hardworking, had a pointed sense of humor, and never missed a Kansas basketball game. The soundtrack to my morning breakfast was the ESPN theme song coinciding with my mother’s blaring Broadway Musicals. I have always had an interest in these two polar opposites of fame, not necessarily for who these people represent in our society, but for the images that they create, their confidence in their steps, and people’s belief in their powers. I am drawn to create sculptures and drawings that over exaggerate all of these conditions: ridiculousness, alienation, athleticism, adoration, plasticity, and mysticism.

New Ryan Weiss / 30 x 30 Art Show

30 x 30 is a fundraiser art show where 30 artists are given 30 canvases and 3 months to complete them.  Here’s the awesome part: If you buy a painting at this show, a hefty portion of the money goes to help kids take lessons at the art center. It’s happening tomorrow, March 26th, from 10am – 2 pm at the Ann Arbor Art Center. (RSVP on Facebook) Our fave Grand Rapids artist and tour guide, Ryan Weiss, cranked out 30 pieces for this show. Here are a few that he sneak previewed:
