Stukenborg

Between a busy weekend of house painting and printing Christina and I went to Astro Coffee and Mudgies in Corktown in Detroit to grab coffee and lunch. At each of these placed we saw awesome letterpress prints advertising events around Detroit. After doing some digging we discovered that the prints were produced by Stukenborg, aka Bryan Christopher Baker. Bryan is a recent transplant from New York who now resides in Corktown. His current project is creating beautiful patterned prints using hundreds of actual dice.

Places We Should Go By Mark Sarmel

Mark Sarmel, whom we had previously featured here, has launched a new project called Places We Should Go featuring t-shirts and housewares all revolving around four imaginary bars. Inspired by dark, out of the way bars, it revolves around the names and logos of the places that seem to have a life of their own. The four imaginary bars featured here are just the type of place one might accidentally stumble into and instantly feel at home, or not, but then the best adventures are often those that are unexpected.

The Fallen Fowl – A small out of the way bar, The Fallen Fowl sits in the part of town where things begin to slip away to the wrong side of the tracks. Awash in vagabonds and other peculiar folk, The Fallen Fowl somehow manages to remain a home away from home for its patrons.

Vintage Inspiration

We’ve been experimenting with designs inspired by vintage packaging and typography. Over the last few months we’ve collected images from around the web. Aside from the excellent resource Grain Edit, which profiles both modern, vintage inspired, design well as actual vintage design, The Product Manual Archive, as well as Flickr are great resources. Below are a few of the jewels that we’ve come across.

Found on Product Manual Archive

I love the patina that forms on some of these items over the years, the wear and tear almost become design elements themselves.

Bikini Birdie

Bikini Birdie is a recently launched photography / design studio consisting of husband and wife team Megan Spelman and illustrator Vicent Poquet. The former Michiganders, whom now live in Spain create great wedding invitations and photographs by combining Megan’s photos and Vincent’s illustrations. Below are some examples of their work, but be sure to stop by their indivual portfolios here and here to see more.

Olly Moss

Olly Moss‘ work is simple, yet genius. This is the kind of designer that I think most people strive to be. One that creates attractive, clean work that gets the point across. Be sure to check out his Flickr photostream to see more of his work.
