Recap: Happy Serum @ Starkweather Arts Center

Happy Serum, featuring artwork by Kill Taupe, Heather Hansma and Crystal Mielcarek, debuted earlier this month. Starkweather Arts Center out in Romeo is totally worth the drive, and you should check out the show in person if you can. Our pictures definitely don’t do the work justice. Happy Serum ends next Saturday, June 25th.

Happy Serum opens on June 3 at Starkweather Arts Center

Our friends Kill Taupe, Heather Hansma, and Crystal Mielcarek have a show opening at Starkweather Arts Center in Romeo, Michigan. Entitled “Happy Serum”, the show focuses on happiness,(though perhaps taking a tongue in cheek approach to the subject) something that the artists feel that Metro area seems to be lacking . The show opens on June 3rd and runs through the 25th.

Carl Oxley III and Tim Gralewski: Collaborative works.

After hibernating most of the winter, Hansma is back! I have been somewhat derelict in my duties of reporting on the fantastic art shows we have in our fine city of Detroit, but no longer. I’m back! With a vengeance! Part II!

*ahem* Excuse me. I get easily excited while blogging. This post isn’t about me finding the energy to leave my house. No, this post is about the new show from local faves Carl Oxley III and Tim Gralewski that is on exhibit at the Woods Gallery from February 14 – March 24, 2011. They collaborated on about fifteen new pieces, and I have to say that I absolutely love the juxtaposition of their two approaches to art. Oxley works in big, bright paint strokes with adorable robots, monkeys, bees, and the like as the subject matter of his work. Gralewski is a screenprinter whose style has a more gritty take on urban existence. The show also featured work from each of them as an individual artist. See some of the highlights of the show after the jump.

Recap: Natural Resources 3 @ Lift

We’ve been playing catchup after our World Tour of Ohio ended in Cleveland this past weekend. A full month ago now, we visited Lift Detroit to see Natural Resources 3. Artists customized Mike Burnett’s Neighborwood and Average Joe Schmo wood toys for this traveling show. Detroit was the last leg of the three city tour.  Check out the gallery behind the cut to see renditions of these toys from many artists, including Detroit faves Kill Taupe, Heather Hansma, Audrey Pongracz and Carl Oxley III.

Detroit Urban Craft Fair Artist Preview: Part 1

It’s almost here! The 5th annual Detroit Urban Craft Fair is this weekend. If you’re planning on coming out for it (and we hope you are!) you’ll want to get the details on parking from Handmade Detroit. While you’re in the city, Always the Forest has a great post on where to eat and what else to do. And don’t forget to stop by Noel Night on Saturday night, which features our esteemed contributor, Heather Hansma. Finally, if you can’t wait for Saturday to get here, warm up on Friday night at 323 East. It’s the opening of Snowflakes and Candy Canes, a show that’s priced for nifty gifties, and includes one Mr. Dennis Jacobs.

As we did last year, we put together a preview of vendors who focus on art and illustration. Behind the cut, you’ll get a sneak peek of who you’ll be seeing at the Detroit Urban Craft Fair.
