Interview: KeeganMeegan

We found out about KeeganMeegan Letterpress & Bindery on our honeymoon in Portland a year and a half ago. After picking up a postcard for an art show at Em Space Book Arts Center, we were lucky enough to find Keegan Wenkman working in his space there. He was very nice and patient with the two of us rubbernecks as we watched him print some posters on a Vandercook.

Keegan and his partner Katy Meegan have been designing and printing together since 2007. The pair has amassed an impressive amount of knowledge and equipment about printmaking and bookmaking. If they can raise the money, (and you can help!) they’re hoping to use their expertise to save an incredibly rare C&P cylinder press bound for scrap. Ever since we first happened upon them, they’ve been a huge inspiration to us, and we’re super excited that they agreed to do an interview.

Recap: SCGI Printmaking Conference

We’re super grateful to Taro Takizawa for covering the SGC International conference for us. Taro has a BFA in Printmaking from Central Michigan University, and his prints are fantastic. He made the trek down to St. Louis for this conference, which is the largest annual gathering for printmakers and is held in a different city each year. Taro showed his work at Open Portfolio and was featured on Printeresting.

One of the keynote speakers at SCGI was Swoon. While she was in town, she worked with the Pulitzer Foundation for the Arts to install a mural (watch video)…as well as a few otherunofficialpieces. Behind the cut, Taro breaks down his SCGI experience in great detail, including his take on hearing Swoon speak, pictures from Open Portfolio, meeting Tugboat Printshop and visiting Firecracker Press.

DEAR ARTISTS: If you see your prints pictured in Taro’s Open Portfolio recap, please comment and credit yourself!

A Couple of Questions for Fizz

Together, CCS grad Katie Major and her boyfriend Jasen Melnick are Fizz, a design duo that specializes in packaging design for breweries and wineries. These Cleveland lovebirds are just getting started building their brand and doing what they love as a team. We think they’re a lovely couple with a lot of talent and a ton of potential.

A Couple of Questions for enormouschampion

enormouschampion is a collaboration between Jordan Provost and Jason Wong that results in beautifully designed cards, prints, and other paper goods. Their latest project together is a brand new line of e-greeting cards, which just debuted over at Paperless Post.

In addition to working on enormouschampion, each of them has their own independent endeavor: Jordan is a photographer, and Jason is one of the typographic wizards behind Friends of Type.

A Couple of Questions for Elevated Press

In 2003 Peter Baker founded the design studio Elevated Works, under the blue line elevated train in Chicago. Five years later, he joined forces with his fiancée, Michelle, to print their wedding invitations, and their printmaking arm Elevated Press came to life. Really beautiful letterpressed prints and paper goods come off of the three presses housed in their Ann Arbor studio.

Two things we didn’t know before doing this interview: one, Pete takes gorgeous photographs (I mean, SERIOUSLY gorgeous), and two, the couple is expecting their first child in July!! We hope to see little him or her manning their craft fair tables later in the year. Gotta earn your keep, kid!

And now, our interview with Pete and Michelle Baker of Elevated Press…
