A Couple of Questions for Elevated Press

In 2003 Peter Baker founded the design studio Elevated Works, under the blue line elevated train in Chicago. Five years later, he joined forces with his fiancée, Michelle, to print their wedding invitations, and their printmaking arm Elevated Press came to life. Really beautiful letterpressed prints and paper goods come off of the three presses housed in their Ann Arbor studio.

Two things we didn’t know before doing this interview: one, Pete takes gorgeous photographs (I mean, SERIOUSLY gorgeous), and two, the couple is expecting their first child in July!! We hope to see little him or her manning their craft fair tables later in the year. Gotta earn your keep, kid!

And now, our interview with Pete and Michelle Baker of Elevated Press…

Grady McFerrin

Grady McFerrin started out in California, hand lettering posters for the Fillmore. Now he’s based out of Brooklyn, and his illustration clients range from Chronicle Books to American Medical News and The Scientist magazine. Communication Arts did a great interview in which he gives advice for newbies by quoting Rushmore.

Nick Lu

Nick Lu is a Los Angeles illustrator who’s done work for The New Yorker and The Globe And Mail and is, in general, kind of a big deal. He’s part of the collective behind Press Print, a shop that’s stocked with affordable artwork based on monthly themes.

A Couple of Questions for Just A Jar

justAjar Design + Press is a collaboration between Sara Alway and Bobby Rosenstock. Together, the couple makes gorgeous letterpress prints and books, and has an impressive portfolio of custom graphic design work. They also have individual creative outlets; Bobby is currently part of a gallery show with book artist Erin Sweeney, and Sara recently published a gardening book called Soil Mates that was inspired by dating manuals.

Detroit Urban Craft Fair Artist Preview: Part 2

We’ve been working super hard around the clock to prepare for the four craft shows that we’re doing this holiday season (see tour dates!). In addition to what you see above, we have much more that we haven’t gotten around to photographing, unless you count some iPhone pics taken in the middle of the night. We’re excited for our work to be shown alongside all the other talented vendors that Handmade Detroit chose this year. Here’s Part 2 of our preview of vendors who focus on art and illustration.

By the way, if you missed Part 1 of the preview, you can find it here.
