Inspiration
I find that when I’m unmotivated to work, watching other artists create artwork inspires me to create my own. Here a few videos of some of my favorite artists working, which also offer interesting insight into their process.
Much more after the break.
Big Payback Art Auction Presented by Juxtapoz
Juxatopz Magazine is holding an online art auction to support the Power House Project of Detroit. The roster 140+ artists who contributed artwork is incredible; including the likes of Shepard Fairey, Swoon, Albert Reyes, Jeremy Fish, Josh Keyes, and WK Interact. The auction runs through November 20th, 2009 and is hosted on Charity Buzz, bid here.
Wacky Print Wednesday #2
Audrey Kawasaki will be releasing a new print, entitled “Saying Goodbye” on Saturday August 22 at 3pm PST in her online store. The print measures 19″ x 22″, is has and edition of 200, and retails for $200 ($480 framed.)
After a bit of a break Shepard Fairey will release a new screenprint, “Close Knit”, this Thursday, the 20th, at a random time. The print measures 18″ x 24″ will cost $50 and sales will benefit the Rush Philanthropic Arts Foundation.
Jason Filipow still has some of his non representational screenprints available in his shop. These are made by pulling ink through a silkscreen without an stencil/ emulsion fixed to the screen, therefore producing unique 1/1 prints with each pass. The prints measure 18″ x 24″ and are priced at a very affordable $20.
One of my favorite artists, Sas Christian has a framed giclee on canvas entitled “Spun” available through Circus Posterus. The print itself is 8″ x 10″ and measures 12″ x 14″ framed, and costs $265.
Cpop Gallery Closing Closing – June 13, 2009 at 6pm
Cpop Gallery’s final show, It’s all about C ends this Saturday. After this the gallery is going to a strictly online presence. If you have yet to have the opportunity to see the show it is well worth the time effort. This is your last chance to see work by well know artists such as: Shepard Fairey, Glenn Barr, Tara McPherson, and Derek Hess in the same place for what I anticipate will be quite some time. Some of the artists are also expected to be on hand. Also, keep an eye on www.cpop.com as the owners plan to launch a completely renovated site with online exhibitions, an online gallery, and shop.
It’s All About (C): CPOP Recap
On Saturday, CPOP held a “farewell opening gala” for it’s last show at its Detroit location. (See my last post for more about CPOP’s future.) The place was packed, with several of the artists in attendance. Afterwards, we had dinner next door at Majestic and then saw a band at the Magic Stick. It made me feel a little wistful to imagine that block of Woodward without CPOP.

A wheatpasted mural by Tristan Eaton
I hope by existing solely online for a while, CPOP can ride out the recession and reopen again. I really believe that seeing the art on their walls in person is the only way to really appreciate it. On a monitor, I’ve never realized how amazing Glenn Barr’s paintings are. And I’ve never noticed the crackled texture of Shepard Fairey’s seemingly flat screenprints.

Original screenprints on wood from Shepard Fairey
Click below to see more pics from the show. The photography is a little better this time, but I think I need to do some research on how to take decent pictures of art. If I use a flash, the paintings have a glare, and if I don’t, they’re too dark. If you have any tips on this, please leave a comment! In addition, there are tons of pictures at CPOP’s Facebook page.

OUR LATEST GIGPOSTER
We got to design and print a poster for Darling Imperial's farewell show at the Berkley Front. They let us do whatever we wanted, so we went with vintage lettering and a weathered, faded feel.
