Tom Haubrick
Through a fantastic interview over at Guardian of Bravery, I found the work of Tom Haubrick. Tom is an illustrator, painter and tattoo artist who has been a mainstay at Comic Con for the past few years. There’s something about his paintings that remind me of the time when I first became drawn to art and artists like Luke Chueh and Kurt Halsey.

I also took a look through his gallery of tattoos. Look what I found!
What a great tribute to Stella Im Hultberg. I wonder what it’s like as an artist to see someone immortalize their work in tattoo form. This is a very impressive replica by Tom. The way he imitated Stella’s watercolor texture is incredible. For more of his paintings and tattoos, check out haubscomix.com.
Crazy 4 Cult 4 Preview
Gallery 1998‘s 4th installation of Crazy 4 Cult will open in a little more than a week, and the lineup is insane. As the opening nears, some of the artists are letting us get a sneak peek of their pieces.
Scott Belcastro (A Clockwork Orange)
Rick Pellegrino (Willy Wonka)
Audrey Pongracz (The Shining)
Audrey Pongracz (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind)
Can’t wait to see more stuff for this show pop up as the week goes on.
UPDATE: We’ll continue to keep this post going as more work surfaces. More behind the cut.
Teaser: Upcoming Stella Im Hultberg Prints
After closing her shop in 2007, Stella Im Hultberg is about to bring it back. And, her shop relaunch will coincide with the release of some new prints. Stella has offered a little teaser on her blog, including the news that some of the prints will be hand colored in gold. Nice!
No word yet on when everything will be available, but I’ll be looking out for it!
New Prints from Stella Im Hultberg
Stella Im Hultberg is about to release a new print set that coincides with her recent opening at Copro Gallery. Aren’t they gorgeous? She seems to have been more deliberate this time in how she placed the tea stains in these pieces. I like how the effect echoes the round shapes in her paintings.
Each print set contains two pieces from the show, Chie (L) & Chandra (R). The prints are limited to an edition of 30 and are $120. Approximately a 7″x9″ image on 8″x10″ paper, all signed and numbered.
The gallery doesn’t have these listed in their shop yet, so I’m hoping they have yet to make these available. However, they do still have some original pieces from Stella’s show, entitled Penumbra.
EDIT: Stella tells us that the prints are currently available and can be ordered by calling or emailing Copro Gallery. Their contact info can be found here.
Process Peeks: Stella Im Hultberg, Kevin Tong, Neither Fish Nor Fowl & Elbow-Toe
I am a person who’s really fascinated by an artist’s process, just as much as if not more so than by the finished pieces. I think it’s because I’ve yet to nail down my own process, which has resulted in a long sad trail of unfinished work. I get impatient that everything doesn’t fall into place right away and abandon ideas all the time. But the more I see how other artists work, I’m learning that it’s not supposed to be easy to create something. It’s just that: a process. And it’s different for everybody, which is why it’s so interesting in the first place.
Poster artist Kevin Tong writes an excellent blog called Tragic Sunshine, on which he gets very detailed about how he works. He’s even done tutorials on nitty-gritty stuff like shipping posters. Here’s a video of him working on an Andrew Bird poster. I was comforted by how much he erases.
My Love For You is a Stampede of Horses recently posted about a studio tour with street artist Elbow-Toe. He keeps stacks of magazine pages, sorted by color, for use in his collages.
While it’s not super neat, everything is in plain view and at his fingertips, which I’m sure allows him to work more easily.
