Imminent Disaster

Imminent Disaster is a Brooklyn street artist that has shown this year at Ad Hoc Art in New York and Thinkspace in LA. She has a formal education in printmaking, and she uses these skills to great effect. I especially love her wheatpasted screenprints and paper cutouts.

In her gallery pieces, she’s combined these methods with block printing, stencils and hand painting to create huge works of art. This piece, The Organist, is 8′ x 8′ and inspired by a historical account of New York’s Great Fire of 1835, in which someone heard organ music playing from a warehouse until it collapsed.

There’s a lot more to see on Imminent Disaster’s Flickr. For something to look forward to, she has an upcoming show with Armsrock at Thinkspace next year.

‘dAP @ the Wyandotte Street Art Fair

The Wyandotte Street Art Fair was so much fun this weekend. The ‘dAP (‘dotte Art Project) was situated right by the stage. The weather was fantastic. We met a ton of great artists there, a few of which we’ll be featuring on the blog later on. For now, here’s a recap of the live art that was happening on Friday and Saturday. Click to see a whole lot of pictures behind the cut.

Dan Kitchener

echos

I recently discovered the work of artist/illustrator Dan Kitchener
over on the Stencil Revolution boards. His unique style of of creating stencils from hand drawnings is a welcome departure from the photoshop filter asthetic that is so common within the stencil community today.

Dan’s shop has many reasonably priced orignals and prints for sale. I particularly like The Fallen and The Watchful series of prints. Each of Dan’s prints hand sprayed and finished.

Logan Hicks

New York based artist Logan Hicks, along with Shepard Fairey, has one of the most influental artists in my own artwork and lead to my experimentation with stencils as a viable medium for creating fine art. Logan’s photo realistic images helped me realize that the medium can be used to create vivid, detailed images, not the flat single color works that I had previously associated with stencils.

Logan’s gritty, industrial subject matter juxtaposed with vibrant colors, handmade and hand sprayed stencils adds an organic, human touch to an otherwise sterile landscape.

Scribes of Detroit at Izzy’s Raw Art Gallery, Detroit

scribesofdetroit

Izzy’s Artists Market and Raw Art Gallery in Detroit is currently seeking submissions for their upcoming Scribes of Detroit show. They are looking for narratives or concepts told through: stencils, graffiti, posters, stickers, and mixed media. There is no mandatory entry fee, and the gallery is taking a (very reasonable) 30% commission on sales. The deadline for submissions is June 14th, 2009 and the show is slated for early July.

I am personally very excited for this show and am looking forward to being part of it. I believe that there are many talented stencil/ graffiti artists in Michigan and finally there is a local gallery show dedicated to them. For more information or to submit work contact Lando at: izzysrawart [at] gmail [dot] com or call (734) 624-6341.
